Thriller to najlepiej sprzedający się album wszech czasów. Liczba sprzedanych egzemplarzy na całym świecie wynosi ponad 100 milionów (33 miliony w Stanach Zjednoczonych[3]). Płyta spędziła łącznie rekordowe 37 tygodni na szczycie amerykańskiej listy przebojów Billboard 200 oraz cały rok w pierwszej dziesiątce tej listy. Thriller pomógł Jacksonowi przełamać bariery rasowe w muzyce popularnej, co objawiło się w spotkaniu piosenkarza z prezydentem Stanów Zjednoczonych Ronaldem Reaganem oraz częstym graniu jego kompozycji w MTV.
