Matka Keiko, Emiko Doi kupiła jej pierwsze pianino na 5. urodziny. Japońska tradycja mówi, iż dziecko, które rozpocznie lekcję gry na danym instrumencie, będzie szkolić się w tym kierunku przez bardzo długi okres w swoim życiu. Tradycja sprawdziła się w przypadku Doi, która studiowała grę na pianinie w czasie całej swojej edukacji w szkole. Choć jej wczesne treningi skupiały się na muzyce poważnej, to w szkole średniej zainteresowała się jazzem i zaczęła komponować własną muzykę. Wtedy brała przykład m.in. ze Steviego Wondera, Siergieja Rachmaninowa, Maurice’a Jarre’a czy Chicka Corea.
