In Flames od czasu albumu „Colony” nieustannie rozwijało się w progresywnym graniu, często zmieniając nieco swój styl. Styl, dzięki wypracowaniu którego Szwedzi odnaleźli się na nowo i ukazali szerszemu spektrum słuchaczy. „I, The Mask” jest chyba jedynym ich albumem, na którym kapela nie obrała konkretnego kierunku i bazując na starych patentach próbowała wykrzesać z siebie coś ekstra. Czy się udało? To zależy jak mocno i za co kochacie In Flames.

Na albumie jest całkiem sporo łagodniejszych numerów, jak „Follow Me” z akustycznymi gitarami, mocno przesterowanymi czystymi wokalami i w zasadzie niewyróżniającą się niczym sekcją rytmiczną. Na „I, The Mask” mocniejsze numery, jak np. toczący się złowieszczo „I Am Above”, którego esencją są świetne wokale. 13 album Szwedów otwiera „Voices” i ten numer można uznać za przekrojowy dla całego longplaya – miksu melodyjnych refrenów, wyraźnych gitarowych zwrotek i odrobiny progresji, która przejawia się w niektórych partiach k
