Ten mecz pamiętam jak dziś. To był naprawdę świetny turniej podopiecznych Janusza Wójcika. Polacy przeszli normalnie jak burza, pokonując po drodze Kuwejt (2:0), Włochy (3:0) i remisując 2:2 z USA. W ćwierćfinale nasi łatwo wygrali z Katarem (2:0), półfinał to pogrom Australijczyków (6:1). No i ten finał. Cóż lepszego naszym mogło się przytrafić? Mecz finałowy na stadionie w Barcelonie, przeciwnikiem drużyna gospodarzy. Na trybunach komplet publiczności, rodzina królewska. 99% ludzi na stadionie kibicuje Hiszpanom. A nasi grają jak równy z równym. To było piękne.
Niestety, to była piękna porażka. Po golu Kowalczyka do przerwy nasi prowadzili, a chłopak z Bródna uciszył trybuny na Camp Nou. Po przerwie Hiszpanie strzelili dwa gole i wydawało się, że jest po meczu. Ale nieoczekiwanie, grając w chwilowym osłabieniu, nasi wyrównują! Gola zdobył Ryszard Staniek. W Polsce histeria, sam pamiętam, jak z moim tatą krzyczeliśmy wniebogłosy przy otwartym balkonie:)
