...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...
Lubię mieć rację. Bo kto nie lubi. Moja racja polega na tym, że gdy sześć lat temu recenzowałem debiutanckie demo Chapel of Disease czułem w kościach, że ci kolesie namieszają w metalowym undergroundzie. Jedyne, czego się nie spodziewałem, że namieszają aż tak bardzo.
Obserwowałem ich rozwój od początku i każdy kolejny album był lepszy. Jednak nie przypuszczałbym, że sprawy potoczą się tak, że – w mojej opinii – „…and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye” będzie najlepszą płytą death metalową w roku 2018, jaką dane mi było usłyszeć. Ale czy tak do końca death metalową? Może zacznicmy od początku. Niemcy wyrośli z oldskula, klasycznych zespołów jak Asphyx, Death, Possessed i te inspiracje cały czas tutaj słychać – mroczny, gęsty death metal to nieprzerwanie jeden ze znaków rozpoznawczych muzyki Chapel of Disease. Ale na trzeciej płycie równie ważnym elementem co metal śmierci jest… hard rock. Tak. I to nie byle jaki, ale ten spod znaku Thin Lizzy. Chyba spora grupa czytelników wie, jakiego mam pierdolca na punkcie grupy Lynotta, więc nie mogłem przejść obojętnie koło „…and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye” – albumu, gdzie inspiracje Irlandczykami są tak głębokie i namacalne. Chapel of Disease udowadnia, że obok mięsistych death metalowych riffów znajdzie się miejsce na melodyjne, podwójne gitarowe ataki, które spokojnie mogłyby się znaleźć na takim „Thunder and Lightnings” czy „Renegade”. Każdy numer tutaj może służyć za taki przykład – nieważne czy „Void of Words’, czy jeden z najdłuższych na płycie „Null” czy którykolwiek inny. Do tego Laurent na tym krążku pozwolił sobie na więcej niż poprzednio w kwestii wokali i wyszło to niesamowicie. Chwilami w jego głosie słychać tak wyraźnie dramaturgię („Oblivious – Obnoxious – Defiant”), że aż za czarne serduszko chwyta. Trochę inaczej, niż w przypadku całości albumu – ten bowiem chwyta za jaja.
Tak, urzekła mnie ta płyta. Od początku do końca, słucham jej na zapętleniu po kilka razy i nie mam dosyć. Oczywiście, nie wszyscy muszą się ze mną zgadzać w kwestii tego, czy jest to najlepszy album z okolic death metalu czy też nie. Niemniej jednak zachęcam wszystkich do sprawdzenia zawartości. Nie zawiedziecie się.

Cologne-based Chapel Of Disease took three years for working on their third album ‘…and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye’. If there would be an award for the longest album title, the Germans would be for sure a nominee and they would have a big chance of becoming the winner. But this doesn’t count and it’s the music that makes the difference and in this case, it sure does. This new power strike from Cologne comprises of six songs, none of them being shorter than 6 minutes.
The band’s first album via Van Records is a great one. Chapel Of Disease is still into death metal, but the album is built on more influences and sources of inspiration. I short glimpse on the label INFO text shows …, and it describes things in a good fashion. There are moments on ‘…and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye’ that aren’t expected of a death metal band. The slow and melancholic ‘1.000 Different Paths’ is one of them, referring more to the 70’s influences than harsh metal. The song comes without growls and reminds me more of the current Opeth sound than of brutal death metal.
Next to ‘1000 Different Paths’ ‘…and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye’ contains songs that sound like a death metal version of Fields Of The Nephilim. ‘Songs of the Gods’ belongs to this category as well as closer ‘The Sound of Shallow Grey’ and a comparison with Tribulation is partly valid also. The fourpiece from Cologne merges these different genres in a great fashion and it’s songs like ‘Oblivious – Obnoxious – Defiant’ that balance with blackened death metal.
What I like with this album are the songs, but it’s mainly the creative approach and thinking that allows the band to cross borders without being afraid of the new. ‘…and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye’ is an excellent album and belongs to my favorites in 2018.
