...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...

Mini album brytyjskiego Cruciamentum (z kilkoma muzykami Grave Miasma i Adorior w składzie), 4 utwory, 25 min. bardzo mrocznego death metalu ziejącego duchem Incantation, Immolation i wczesnego Morbid Angel, dodatkowo zabarwionego lekkim wpływem black metalu i wolniejszymi, niemalże doom'owymi wstawkami, całość aż kipi od smoły i czerni!

Cruciamentum has been making various unseemly noises in the British underground over the past few years, particularly via an extremely well-regarded 2009 demo and an excellent split with Vasaeleth from last year. Engulfed in Desolation sees the band finally making its official debut with this 24-minute EP that is, to put none too fine a point on it, completely fucking world-crushing.

So yes, it’s new death metal played in the shadows of old, and yes, it owes a heavy debt to Incantation (and Immolation, and Morbid Angel, &, &…), but unlike so many other bands that have cropped up with a similar jive of late, Cruciamentum’s death metal is vitally thrilling because of songs, not sound. Given that if you’re a death metal fan of even the most tentative stripe you’ve heard riffs and blasts and grooves an awful lot like these before, Engulfed in Desolation can only thrive on songwriting and delivery. On both counts, Cruciamentum has provided a masterclass: First they plan it, then they goddamned sell it.

Guitarist DL’s vocals are a hoarse bellow, but they always retain a level of frantic urgency that makes them much more compelling than most rote death metal vocals. The band is equally skull-rattling traveling in lock-step as in dual guitar and bass counterpoint, but the ensemble’s strength is particularly notable in the frequent transitions from full-speed-ahead blasting to absolutely massive doom riff breaks. See the halfway point of “Thrones Turned to Rust” for a great example; the whole band sounds like they’re just digging so deep into the soul of their instruments that your body can’t help but be convulsed by the combined force.

The production job on Engulfed in Desolation is thick, mostly clean, and always crushing, and ought to finally destroy the notion so unfortunately prevalent among so many of the recent Incantation-philes that all that really matters is the creepy, cavernous sound. See, all the musty and tar-thick atmosphere in the crypt-kicking world don’t mean shit if you can’t write a song that people want to listen to with their ears. “Fallen in Disease” is a fetid bloom with a woozy 5/4 riff that knocks you off balance before grinding you back into 4, and the brief yet piercing leads that accompany that same riff at the song’s end arc up out of nowhere like a titanium vapor trail. Not content to loosen its grip as the disc runs on, the final riff in closer “Unsanctified Temples” is a nasty, serpentine wonder that dives straight into half-time, one final kiss-off before a single bell peals out a warning that’s already too late. Riffs are potent weapons in the right hands.

If Cruciamentum has nary an original bone in its body, it’s not because the band functions purely by slavish imitation, but rather because the band has felled legions of giants, removed the choicest bones from the vanquished foes, and fashioned itself a super-skeleton with which to rain destruction on an unsuspecting countryside. Engulfed in Desolation crashes and grooves, creeps and burns, unsettles and reassures, so open your silly craw and drink down doom.
