Pierwszy zbiór poezji ukazał się w 1956 roku. We wczesnych latach piosenki Cohena opierały się na muzyce ludowej,
w latach 70. skłaniały się ku muzyce pop i kabaretowi. Od lat 80. Cohen śpiewa niskim głosem, przy akompaniamencie muzyki
