Winter’s Breath to jednoosobowy projekt, pochodzący z Austrii. Na tyle młody, że przyczyną jego powstania może być po prostu covidowa izolacja. Mimo to imć Burkhard zdążył wypuścić EPkę, singla, splita oraz jeden album pełnowymiarowy. I na nim właśnie skupię swoje rozważania.

Graveyard Symphonies jako jedyne z dzieł Austriaka ujrzało światło dzienne dzięki rzeczywistej wytwórni, jaką tym razem jest nasza rodzima Via Nocturna. Album trwa prawie pięćdziesiąt minut i składa się z dziewięciu utworów. Najlepszą charakterystyką jest jego tytuł. Minorowy, quasi symfoniczny, miejscami doomowy black metal stworzony został bardziej w celu opowiedzenia jakichś zalatujących tanim dreszczowcem historii, niż żeby zachwycić muzyką. Powolne tempo instrumentów oparte na klawiszach i zaprogramowanej sekcji rytmicznej stanowi tło dla niskiego, szepczącego wokalu z lekkim odcieniem growlu. Słowa są bardziej deklamowane niż śpiewane, a całość brzmi jak rzucanie czaru lub cicha opowieść płynąca spod kołdry z zapalaną latarką przy twarzy. Miejscami kawałki się ożywiają (Lessons of the Past) i mamy wtedy do czynienia z tempami wręcz blastującymi. Są to jednak raczej krótkie antrakty niż jakiś konkretny kawałek płyty. Od czasu do czasu nieco wyraźniej słychać gitarę (Dead Man’s Day) i wtedy muzyka nabiera nieco koloru. Zwłaszcza, że akurat na tym kawałku wszystko w ogóle dzieje się szybciej, a zestawienie blastującej perkusji z funeralnymi klawiszami jest nawet ciekawe. A może ten kawałek podoba mi się z tego prozaicznego powodu, że nie ma na nim tego deklamacyjnego wokalu? Utwór tytułowy Graveyard Symphonies jest przedostatnim na płycie i jest kontynuacją generalnego pomysłu na płytę. Melodyjne klawisze, stłumiona, powolna perkusja, gitary schowane gdzieś zupełnie z tyłu i ten wokal… Wokal, który z każdym numerem podoba mi się coraz mniej. Album zamyka instrumentalne outro …Of the End, które wespół z równie delikatnym intrem The Beginning… stanowią całkiem ładną liryczną klamrę do wszystkiego tego, co jest w środku.

Dawno nie recenzowałem niczego od Via Nocturny, ale ten powrót do opolskiego labelu jest dla mnie niezbyt udany. Poza kilkoma bardziej żwawymi fragmentami oraz lirycznymi antraktami album nie przypadł mi zbytnio do gustu. Gdyby jeszcze podmienić ten wokal na coś innego. A tak, ten album położyły partie wokalne. I kropka.

WINTER’S BREATH is an Austrian symphonic black metal/melodic death metal project formed in 2020. Graveyard Symphonies is the debut full-length and is a follow up to the 2020 EP Rising Storm. The record was released on Via Nocturna Records June 11, 2021.

The album opens and closes with two short instrumental pieces, “The Beginning…” and “…Of The End.” Both are eerie and ambient. The tones are muted and dark. The drums are hardly noticeable, which makes some sense in this context. The guitars are gentle and ethereal. The keyboards add depth to the sound.

Between those instrumentals are more full songs and one last instrumental, “Last Breath.” With the exception of “Dead Man’s Day,” all songs are pretty long, ranging from six to over ten minutes. This is fairly typical of the genre, so nothing unexpected.

“Desperate Soul” is pretty indicative of the rest of the record. Slow, somewhat Gothic in its’ feel and sound, the guitars are evenly paced and never really go anywhere into the shredding realm. The drums are fairly simple, but right on time. The keyboards are basically the star of the show. They add more emotion to the recording, layering in a lot of tension and desire, depending on the mood.

“Path To Extinction” adds in horns for an even broader sound. The drums are quicker and provide more desperation to the feel. There are no clean vocals on this record and shouldn’t be. The vibe does not support clean. The guitars are better here. The riff a little more complicated and exciting.

Farther down the track listing, we get “Lessons of The Past,” a sludgy, doom-laden tune with a really dark feel. The tuning is a good choice for this song. The keys are darker and need a lower tuning on the guitar. It’s a good fit overall.

The last lyric song on the record is the title track, “Graveyard Symphonies.” Clocking in at over ten minutes, this is the final, epic portion of the tale. We again have ethereal, ambient sound all over this track. Horns and bells set the stage before the guitars and keys come in. The tone is still dark, but lighter than the earlier tracks, almost like this is the reward at the end of life, going to an afterlife, whatever that may be.

This album feels like a journey from cradle to grave in some ways, hence the beginning… of the end. There is good composition within the songs and the overall record is very listenable. There is a theme through the whole album, repeated tones and phrases that tie the whole thing together well. This is very good for a debut and hints at a future full of promise.

WINTER’S BREATH is here to tell us stories of life and death. Thematically, the graveyard runs like a thread through the album. Inspired by loss and personal experiences over the past few years, those songs emerged from inner struggles. The quintessence of humanity. Desperate souls are on their path to extinction. But armed with knowledge and experience from their past, they can try to find peace in the afterlife. No matter how you look at it, in the end, no one can outrun the reaper’s judgment.
