To, że Voivod to formacja genialna, mająca w dorobku kilka płyt ocierających się o geniusz, to fakt niepodważalny. Dyskusja zaczyna się, gdy przychodzi wybrać krążek najlepszy, albo ten ulubiony. Każda z płyt wydanych w okresie od "Killing Technology" do "Phobos" (oprócz "Negatron") to materiały co najmniej prawie wybitne i każda z nich jest potencjalnie najlepsza. Przez kilka lat na swojego faworyta typowałem "Nothingface", ale ostatnie L4 skutecznie uświadomiło mnie, że to przy dźwiękach "The Outer Limits" mam największą radochę.

"The Outer Limits" w uproszczeniu można nazwać udoskonaloną kontynuacją rockowej formuły zapoczątkowanej na płycie "Angel Rat". W dalszym ciągu grupa unika thrashowych korzeni skupiając się raczej na bliższej mainstreamowi melodyce osadzonej gdzieś w grunge'u czy roku alternatywnym.

Zadziwiające jest jednak to, jak Voivod połączył piosenkowy charakter utworów z wysmakowanymi progresywnymi aranżacjami. Takie utwory haj otwierający płytę "Fix My Heart" czy wieńczący krążek "We Are Not Alone" to szlagiery, które spokojnie mogłyby lecieć w rozgłośniach radiowych. Z drugiej strony mamy pełny kontrastów "Le Pont Noir", 17-minutowy, progrmetalowy majsterszyk "Jack Luminous", który zdecydowanie można uznać, za najlepszą kompozycję jak Voivod kiedykolwiek nagrał, czy mechaniczny, osobliwy "Lost Machine".

Tym jednak co najbardziej mnie urzekło w tym krążku, to ogrom przestrzeni jak pojawia się w partiach instrumentalnych (to brzmienie gitary!!!) oraz ogromny dystans do własnej twórczości. Mam nieodparte wrażenie, że "kosmos" na "The Outer Limits" został świadomie sprowadzony do pewnego pastiszowo-komiksowego poziomu, tak jakby grupa puszczała oczko do słuchaczy. W efekcie ogólnie pozytywny wydźwięk płyty podkreśla jej bardziej niepokojące fragmenty (np. zakończenie wspomnianego "Le Point Noir", niepokojąca oszczędność i przestrzeń "Moonbeam Rider" czy bardziej agresywne fragmenty "Jack Luminous").

"The Outer Limits" to płyta nagrana przez dojrzałych artystów. Materiał, który powinien trafić zarówno do mniej jak i do bardziej wyrafinowanego słuchacza. Nawet bez Blacky'ego na basie grupa potrafiła napisać kawał naprawdę pasjonującej, bardzo dojrzałej, wyrafinowanej ale i nieprzekombinowanej muzyki, którą naprawdę da się polubić bardzo szybko
