Great album from their early days and sadly very hard to track down. Totally different to the more well known and much poorer stuff. Several of these tracks were badly reworked on Spartacus.


I believe this was the first full length album released by Liverpool's The Farm. Fire Records released it on vinyl only in 1986, and then re-released it with bonus tracks on compact disc in 1993, after the band had a huge hit with Spartacus. Sadly, it's hard to track this down and purchase it anymore (however the mp3s are available for purchase).

If your knowledge of The Farm is limted to the hits ("Stepping Stone," "Groovy Train," etc.), this is totally different and much better, in my opinion. Some of the tracks from this were reworked for Spartacus, so there may be a small measure of familiarity. That familiar sound is the voice of singer Peter Hooton. This early incarnation of the band had a full horn section, lending them a slight ska-feel. Their sound on this album falls in between the synth-reliant band they became and Madness. I highly recommend this for fans of The Farm's later work, or for fans of indie pop, in general.
