Piękna Ania zakochuje się z wzajemnością w ubogim subiekcie Jurku, podającym się zresztą (w wyniku pewnego nieporozumienia) za radcę Chełmońskiego. Rodzice Ani stojący na progu bankructwa pragną wydać córkę bogato za mąż. Na przyszłego zięcia wybierają ku przerażeniu dziewczyny podstarzałego gbura, niejakiego Krachta. Kiedy po pewnym czasie zjawia się prawdziwy radca Chełmoński, Jurek zmuszony jest wyznać Ani prawdę. Dziewczyny to co prawda nie zniechęca, wyznaje jednak ukochanemu prawdę o swojej sytuacji materialnej i zamiarach rodziców. Pewnego dnia do sklepu, w którym pracuje Jurek przychodzi Kracht ze znajomym. Czekają w sklepie na Anię i jej rodziców - mają bowiem wspólnie wybrać meble do przyszłego mieszkania. Jurek słyszy jak Kracht przyznaje się przyjacielowi, że nie kocha Ani a jedynie liczy na spory posag. Po przyjściu Ani i rodziców Jurek demaskuje Krachta. Młodzi postanawiają się pobrać.
