With their sleek, mechanical sound inspired by proto-punk, garage rock, and bubblegum pop, Boston-based quintet the Cars racked up a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles, becoming the most successful American new wave band of the late '70s and early '80s. They had enough rock & roll attitude to cross over to album rock radio, while still being heavily influenced by the art rock of artists like Suicide, the Velvet Underground, and Roxy Music. Their first two albums (1978's The Cars and 1979's Candy-O) were new wave classics; their fifth album, 1984's Heartbeat City, was a modern pop masterpiece fueled by a run of videos that became MTV staples. The Cars broke up in 1988, but their music's popularity and influence never faded. This continued interest led to the band reuniting twice, in the mid-2000s without Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr (who passed away in 2000) and again in 2011 with all the living members involved.

The Four Tops' story is one of togetherness and success. These Motown legends teamed up in high school, spent over four decades together without a personnel change, and in between became a top-tier act on a label with no shortage of talent, ranking with the Temptations and the Supremes as its most consistent hitmakers. Where many other R&B vocal groups spotlighted a tenor, the Four Tops were fronted by deep-voiced Levi Stubbs -- who had all the grit of a gospel-trained soul belter -- yet the Tops' creamy harmonies, filled out by Duke Fakir, Obie Benson, and Lawrence Payton, were smooth enough for Motown's pop-soul productions.

Matchbox are an English rockabilly band that formed in 1971, and is still active as of 2019.

Formed in Middlesex, by Iain "Houndog" Terry, Fred Poke, Jimmy Redhead and Wiffle Smith. After 1978, the line-up consisted of Graham Fenton (lead vocalist), Steve Bloomfield (lead guitar, vocals), Gordon Scott (rhythm guitar), Fred Poke (bass guitar) and Jimmy Redhead (drums). Redhead had left in 1973, Smith in 1977 and Lupton in 1978 to tour with Chuck Berry. Dick Callan joined Matchbox on guitar, saxophone and violin until approximately 1985, writing many of the band's B-sides.

This 2 CD set does indeed collect all recordings that Fats recorded for Associated Transcription Service. Fats did two sessions for Associated, the first in 1935, the second in 1939. Both sessions find Fats in fine form at two different junctures of his career. In the 1935 session, Fats plays and sings a few medleys of his recent songs he had recorded under his new contract with RCA Victor. In some instances he is joined by his band mate Rudy Powell on clarinet and alto saxophone. While Powell's tone quality is a bit harsh, his ability as a creative improviser is superb. He was an authority on western lore and music so his career as a singer and speaker continued long after the era of the Hollywood cowboys

His celebrated singing of 'High Noon' (Do Not Forsake Me)' on the western film of the same name has become an all-time favourite. Three different versions are included here.
