This reissue is unrelated to another V.S.O.P. set simply titled A Jazz Band Ball. Terry Gibbs on vibes and marimba matches wits and creativity with Victor Feldman and Larry Bunker, both of whom double on vibes and xylophone. Assisted by pianist Lou Levy, bassist Max Bennett and drummer Mel Lewis, the intriguing frontline essentially plays bop, but with a great deal of color. The interaction between the vibraphonists, who are all featured and occasionally trade off, is the main reason to acquire this very interesting set.

Pianist Tete Montoliu gets some Cedar Walton backing here – in a trio with Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – both musicians who really make the record stand out from the pack! Tete himself is at the peak of his powers – able to play with this commanding sense of majesty from the very first note – but with a style that also has plenty of room for more lyrical flourishes, too – although often with these soulful strides that we don't seem to hear that well in other trio sessions of this vintage! We're not going to credit Jones and Higgins with bringing this on – but heck, they sound wonderful here, and really make the whole thing crackle with warm imagination throughout. Live! is a 1972 live album by Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles. It was recorded on New Year's Day in 1972 inside of a dormant volcano, Diamond Head in Honolulu as part of a music festival.

The performance was not Santana the band but Carlos Santana with a few members of Santana and some friends from the Bay Area (Neal Schon, Coke Escovedo, Gregg Errico, and Michael Carabello) plus drummer/singer Buddy Miles, simply having a vacation and taking a break. Consider this Santana's crossroad before entering his jazz fusion phase. This Legacy Columbia CD was released on 6 September, 1994.

Eight months prior to their triumphant worldwide debut at Woodstock, Santana played a 4-night set at the Fillmore West on December 19-22, 1968. The resulting 2-disc recording from this fertile developmental period ably demonstrates the remarkably creative path Carlos Santana took to inevitable fame. Utilizing a line-up that included Gregg Rolie, vocals and keyboards, David Brown, bass, Doc Livingston, drums and Marcus Malone, congas, the band's sound was a tasty gumbo of rhythm and passion.

As evidenced in their set list, Santana's influences at this time included master African percussionist Babatunde Olatunki ("Jingo"), jazz musician Chico Hamilton ("Conquistadores Rides Again") and Albert King ("As The Years Go Passing By").
