Nothing was ever quite the same after Nirvana. The band's second album, 1991's Nevermind, revolutionized popular music by bringing alternative rock above ground, introducing mainstream audiences to sounds and concepts that had previously existed only in shadowy record store corners and on low-frequency college radio airwaves. 'The Final Jolly Roger' to nie tylko, jak wskazuje sam tytuł, epitafium Running Wild, a zarazem prezent dla najbardziej zagorzałych, nieutulonych w żalu fanów, ale też prawdziwa gratka dla wszystkich tych, którzy lata temu cenili sobie niemiecką armadę, a później z różnych powodów stracili zainteresowanie jej twórczością.

Formalnie zespół powstał w roku 1976, jednak pod nazwą Running Wild działał od 1979 r. Jubileusz trzydziestolecia kapeli nie przebiegł tak, jak chcieliby fani. Najpierw, w 2009 roku Rock 'n' Rolf poINFOrmował, że zaprawiona w bojach piracka łajba ostatecznie zawinie do portu, a 30 lipca tego samego roku Niemcy zagrali ostatni, pożegnalny koncert na Wacken.

In some ways, the Sweet epitomized all the tacky hubris and garish silliness of the early '70s. Fusing bubblegum melodies with crunching, fuzzy guitars, the band looked like a heavy metal band, but were as tame as any pop group. It was a dichotomy that served them well, as they racked up a number of hits in both the U.K. and the U.S. Most of those songs were written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, a pair of British songwriters who had a way with silly, simple, and catchy hooks. Chinn/Chapman and Sweet were smart enough to latch on to the British glam rock fad, building a safer, radio-friendly, and teen-oriented version of Queen, T. Rex, and Gary Glitter. By the end of the '70s, the group's time at the top of the charts had expired but their hit singles lived on not only as cultural artifacts, but also as the predecessors for the pop-metal of the '80s.

Key figures of the British Invasion, the mid-'60s mod movement, and '70s arena rock, the Who were an undeniably powerful sonic force. They exploded conventional rock and R&B structures with Townshend's furious guitar chords, Entwistle's hyperactive basslines, and Moon's vigorous, seemingly chaotic drumming. Unlike most rock bands, the Who based their rhythm on Townshend's guitar, letting Moon and Entwistle improvise wildly over his foundation while Daltrey belted out his vocals. The band thrived on this sound in concert, but on record they were a different proposition: Townshend pushed the group toward new sonic territory, incorporating pop art and conceptual extended musical pieces into the group's style.
