Amerykański zespół hardcore thrash metalowy Carnivore powstał w 1983 roku na Brooklynie z inicjatywy basisty Petera Steela (który grał kiedyś w Fallout) i gitarzysty Louiego Beateaux. Wkrótce dołączył do nich perkusista Marc Piovanetti. Ich debiutancki album miał speedmetalową okładkę, ale hardcore'owe serce, a okładka zawierała sporo rasistowskich swastyk i buntowniczych punków. W 1986 roku Carnivore dołączył gitarzysta Keith Alexander, ale zespół najwyraźniej uznał, że podział tantiem na cztery części jest zbyt kosztowny i powrócił do pierwotnej formy.
Drugi album, „Retaliation”, wyraźnie czerpał z doświadczeń amerykańskich zespołów hardcore metalowych (choć w innych krajach takich nie było), takich jak Suicidal Tendencies i SOD. Lokomotywna ciężkość i tempo (podłoże Motörhead jest wyczuwalne) stanowiły idealne medium dla gniewnych i bezwzględnych tekstów Petera. Cardiacs to angielski zespół rockowy założony w Kingston upon Thames przez Tima Smitha (gitara, wokal prowadzący) i jego brata Jima (gitara basowa, chórki) w 1977 roku pod nazwą Cardiac Arrest. Uznawani za jeden z czołowych kultowych zespołów rockowych w Wielkiej Brytanii, Cardiacs łączyli w swoim brzmieniu różne gatunki, w tym art rock, rock progresywny, art punk, post-punk, jazz, psychodelię i heavy metal (a także elementy muzyki cyrkowej, barokowego popu, muzyki średniowiecznej, rymowanek dziecięcych i szant). Całość dopełniał anarchiczny wokal Smitha oraz jego trudne do rozszyfrowania teksty. Styl sceniczny zespołu był teatralny i często obejmował niepokojące kostiumy i makijaże, a także konfrontacyjne zachowania na scenie. Ich dźwięk i wizerunek sprawiały, że nie cieszyli się sympatią prasy, jednak z czasem zdobyli oddane grono fanów. Wstawka zawiera szósty, najnowszy album studyjny zespołu.
