Powstanie, pierwsze próby i częściowa krystalizacja składu Rhapsody miała miejsce we włoskiej miejscowości Triest w roku 1993. Wspólną przygodę z muzyką rozpoczęło wtedy dwóch założycieli formacji - Luca Turilli wraz z Alexem Staropolim. Jak później czas pokazał, stali sie oni trzonem, mózgiem nowatorskiego muzycznego konceptu, jakim niewątpliwie jest Rhapsody."[...] w Rhapsody monopol na tworzenie mam ja i Alex [...]. Wszystko od początku do końca robimy my dwaj. Nawet linie wokalne są w stu procentach nasze" - tak o pracy w zespole wypowiadał się Luca Turilli w 1999 roku. Zamierzeniem artystów było tworzenie muzyki heavy metalowej wzbogaconej o elementy klasyczne, instrumentalne, okraszone chórami i chórkami. Formalnie przyjęła ona nazwę "Symphonic Power Metalu", jednak nazewnictwo pozostawia zatarte granice rodzajowe i można również spotkać nazwy "Hollywood Metal", "Fantasy Metal", itd.

Zespół został założony w Espoo w Finlandii, miasto te leży 10 kilometrów od stolicy Helsinek. Children Of Bodom zostało założone po koniec 1997 roku, w tym roku został wydany ich debiutancki krążek "Something Wild". Przed zmianą nazwy na obecną, grupa nazywała się Inearthed.

Inearthed zostało założone przez Alexiego i Jaske w 1993 roku. Potem Ale, Henka i klawiszowiec J. Pirisjoki dołączyli do zespołu. Wydali dwa demo albumy, pierwsze zatytułowali "Ubiquitos Absence Of Remission" - zawierało cztery utwory, zostało nagrane w 1994 roku w Astia Studios. Drugie demo nazwali "Shining", które zawierało również cztery kawałki, zostało nagrane dwa lata później. Muzyka na obu tych demach była bardzo dobra, ale totalnie inna niż ta, którą teraz gra Children Of Bodom. Inerthed grało melodyjny death metal. Z zespołu odszedł klawiszowiec, zastąpił go Janne. Na początku był tylko muzykiem, który miał zagrać partie keyboardu na "Something Wild", ale potem został pełnoprawnym członk
