Jag Panzer a właściwie Tyrant bo tak na początku nazwali grupę założyło czterech muzyków z Colorado Sprinx: Harry Conklin (wokal), Mark Briody (gitara), John Tetley (bass) i Rick Hilyard. Na początku działalności grupa gra w miejscowych klubach głównie covery Black Sabbath, Judas Priest i Rainbow. Grupa nagrywa dwie kasety demo z których druga trafia do Andrew'a Banksa, człowieka, który tworzył magazyn "Heavy Metal Times". Ten spotkał się z zespołem, nawiązał przyjaźń i opowiedział o rychłej przeprowadzce do Los Angeles (miasta gdzie muzyka metalowa miała się najlepiej w Stanach). Banks dostał od zespołu większą ilość kaset i wyruszył do "Miasta aniołów", tam stał się głównym promotorem muzyki Tyrant. Doprowadził wreszcie do tego, że kapelą zainteresowały się dwie wytwórnie Metal Blade i Azra. Okazało się, że istnieje już grupa Tyrant i na dodatek ma już na swoim koncie oficjalne wydawnictwo, zespół zmienia nazwę na Jag Panzer (od niemieckiego czołgu). Grupa podpisuje k
